China Mobile-led consortium wins Yemen’s third GSM license (From telegeography.com, October 3, 2005)

 

- A consortium comprising China Mobile and local Yemeni investors has won Yemen’s third mobile GSM license with a bid of USD150 million, according to Reuters. The offer outbid rival submissions from Omantel, which offered USD101.5 million, and four other companies, and marks the first license win for the Chinese outside its home market. SyriaTel, Millicom International Cellular and Wataniya were also linked to the tender process.

 

Siemens signs $7.8 million contract with SabaFon (From menareport.com, October 30, 2002)

 

- Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Network Group have signed a new contract with SabaFon in Yemen, worth eight million euros ($7.8 million), to expand its GSM Network, stated a press release.

Siemens' partnership with SabaFon started in 2000. Since then, Siemens has implemented a full turnkey GSM network in
Yemen, including mobile switching centers, base stations systems and microWave systems. Recently, SabaFon announced the first 100,000 subscribers mark and Siemens is already providing additional capacity to cater for 250,000 subscribers.

Siemens offers a range of mobile solutions including mobile devices, infrastructure and applications. Devices include mobile phones, wireless modules, mobile organizers and cordless phones as well as products for wireless home networks.

The infrastructure portfolio includes GSM, GPRS and 3G mobile network technologies from base stations and switching systems to intelligent networks for prepaid services. Mobile applications cover solutions for messaging, location based services or mobile payment. For the fiscal year 2001, the group recorded sales of €11.3 billion and employed 30,730 people worldwide.

 

Orascom Telecom sells stake in Yemen’s Sabafon (From menareport.com, September 19, 2002)

- Egypt’s Orascom Telecom Holding (OT) announced that it has sold its 32 percent stake in SabaFon, Yemen’s GSM mobile communications operator to the Al-Ahmar Group. The company did not disclose further details regarding the transaction.

Al-Ahmar also acquired the shares of Hellascom in Sabafon. Sabafon's subscriber base had reached 89,000 at the end of the first quarter of the year 2002. “With the completion of this transaction, all litigation between the parties will be dropped, in addition to the legal actions against the former employees of Sabafon,” stated an OT press release.

Over the past year, Orascom Telecom has also been trying to sell its loss making Sub-Saharan Africa subsidiary, Telecel, in a bid to decrease its debt burden and streamline operations. OT is a GSM telecommunications and internet services operator in the
Middle East, Africa and the Indian sub-continent.

Yemen gets switched on by Alcatel (from itp.net, August 3, 2001) 

- Yemen’s rapid expansion of its telephone network continues apace, after a new deal with Alcatel to add another 164,000 lines across the country.

Under the contract, the French telecom giant will supply Yemen’s Public Telecommunications Corporation (PTC) with 21 high capacity Alcatel 1000 Multimedia Multiservices switches.

“PTC has decided to upgrade its entire network with the aim of providing even better service to its clients, said Yemen’s minister of communications, Abdul Malak Al Mua’limi.

“With the Alcatel 1000 MM system, we will enable our customers to access high-speed Internet access and multimedia services.

“Furthermore, these new systems will significantly raise our network capacity and will reduce drastically our costs in network engineering and operating systems.

Each node on the Alcatel 1000 MM platform carries an extra 30% reserve capacity, allowing for the addition of extra subscribers without the need for expensive new infrastructure additions.

SANAA — Siemens and Sabafon have launched anywhere call service from mobile phone users in Yemen.

According to a Press release, Sabafon customers in Yemen are now able to make and receive calls on their Yemeni phone numbers even when they are outside the country. To date, there are more than 13,000 GSM subscribers with Sabafon and that number is expected to increase with the enhancements that GSM roaming brings.

"In the recent past, Beb El Yemen has been opened to provide the connection between old Sana'a, an insight into early human civilization, and all visitors coming from the different regions of the world. Now, Sabafon opens the Roaming feature to provide once again, the gate that will connect Yemen and the rest of the world through mobile telephony. We are proud to be the meeting point between tradition and technology," said Hassan Kabbani, CEO of Sabafon in Yemen.

Boost to Yemen phone lines (from the itp.net, July 12, 2001)

Yemen’s terrestrial network has been greatly expanded, with thousands of new lines installed during the last month.

22,000 fixed lines were installed in Sana’a general secretariat over the last four weeks, according to Ismael Al Aawmi, general manager of the Public Telecommunications Corporation.

"This comes along a couple of ambitious steps to make a big progress in the level of telecommunications," he said.

"Work is going on to expand the switched in some of the city’s avenues. This expansion coincides with the important steps to ease subscription procedures through opening new offices that offer subscribers the service."

Jetcom 2001 To Open Next Month (from the Yemen Observer, March 25, 2001)

SANA’A - Final touches for the opening of the third Al Jazirah Exhibition for Information and Telecommunications Techniques (Jetcom.2001) are almost over. The exhibition is to be organised by the Apollo International Exhibitions during the period April 8-13 at Expo Centre of Sana'a.

Mr. Omer Al Nahmi, Marketing Manager of Apollo Company told the Yemen Observer that the exhibition is being organised for the third consecutive time after scoring great success and huge attendance during the years 1999 and 2000.

"The difference," Mr. Nahmi added" is vast as this time giant companies operating in the field of computer, telecommunications and office furniture shall be participating vigorously." This year's exhibition will be remarkable by the admission of the GSM Yemen, he said.

Companies to take part are: Tihama Company, Canon, Sabafon and their agents, Spacetel Yemen and their agents, Assalam Corporation, Net Technology, Aptech Computer Company, the Yemeni Company for Construction, Sam Company and other companies along with trade centres.

It is note worthy that during the exhibition period scientific forums and seminars as well as introductory sessions, by participant delegate of international companies, shall be held.
